Bahari Paradox

by: Ayanna Nahmias

“Bahari Paradox” chronicles the true story of childhood experiences as the older daughter of a gifted American physicist and mathematician emigrating to Africa in the 1970s, searching for a place to call home. Interspersed throughout are harrowing life-threatening encounters, historic country cultural events and bucolic natural wonders seen while transiting eight countries and covering more than 8,000 miles from West Africa to East Africa. The new Peugeot 504 wagon purchased especially for the trip proved worthy of its advertising.

There were few paved roads, long stretches of unmapped territories, and no up-to-date maps. Ever the resourceful planner, my father had calculated the approximate petrol that would be needed before the next largest city and had strapped barrels of petrol to the roof of the car. Visualize an I.E.D. on wheels in the blazing African sun–inside a family of five traveling 30 days straight, risking life and limb to arrive finally in Tanzania’s capital city, Dar es Salaam, which ironically means ‘haven of peace’ in Arabic. Highs replaced lows in this paradise, Bahari Beach Resort, an idyllic respite. Little did we know this haven of peace was preparing us for the storms of life that were gathering on the horizon.
